King
Kullen to Expand, Pastabilities to be demolished (12-11-00 meeting)
Mayor Pellegrino indicated that the King Kullen has been inquiring about
expanding and as a result, Pastabilities would be demolished to yield
more parking. No permits applications have yet to be filed. Pastabilities
may take an open store in the shopping center. The Village is also evaluating
if the parking spaces are currently undersized. Mayor Pellegrino indicated
that the entire lot would be restriped after King Kullen expands.

Meeting in the Port News
It is curious that I was told that the editor of the Port News attended
the 1-8-01 Village Meeting and taped the preceding. In response to a
letter to the editor, she implied that only a portion of the meeting
was taped. I still have not seen any news regarding a summary of the
meeting in the paper. The Sentinel published
an article. I was also told that several letters to the editor from
the Civic Association and Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington
regarding the 1-8-01 meeting were not placed in the paper.

Village Meeting News
The Village had a heated meeting regarding the rezoning of the Lewis
Oil property. See the Sentinel article
on the site. In a nutshell, the Village approved the rezoning of
the Lewis Oil property. The Civic Association still questioned if the
petition of 327 names requesting a Full Environmental Impact Statement
(FEIS) was reviewed. The Mayor stated that these signatures were acquired
through scare tactics. The Civic Association's position is to get as
much information as possible before a rushed decision is reached. Scare
tactics were not used, merely a request for more data through a study
(FEIS). Read the full story here
The
Village also held two public hearings. One on the use of PVC fences
for residents and Burger King wants to modify their site by installing
some type of playground. More to come.

Village Buys Waterfront Land
Also at the 10-19-00 meeting, the Mayor stated that the Village
bought the Feron Marina (Building directly across the street from Diwan)
for $500,000. The Village will seek to obtain a grant to acquire the
property. The Village also may try to sell some of their undeveloped
land near Radcliff to fund the deal. More info to come when it is available.

Village
Budget Meeting Possibly 3-5-01
At the April 2000 Village meeting, the Board set the date of 3-5-01
for the next Budget Meeting. At the 2-8-01 meeting, the Mayor was unsure
if they would be discussing this information and would have to get back
to the Civic Association. Palma (Village Clerk) indivcated that a Regular
meeting was scheduled but could not clarify why it was scheduled. This
date still is scheduled as a workshop for unspecified business. No Meeting
was held.

Pathetic
Turnout for Lewis Oil 9-11-00 Public Meeting
A second public meeting was held to discuss the possible rezoning of
the Lewis Oil Property. The property is basically zoned industrial and
the developers want the Village to change the zone for a commercial
use. Without the change of zone, the development of the newer/bigger
Grand Union can not happen.
With
an apathetic turnout (approx. 60 people) there was little public input
(either pro or con). With that type of hands off attitude, the new supersized
supermarket will be here in no time. Then it will be too late to ask
how can I get involved or how can my opinion be heard.
Come
to the Public Hearing on September 11, 2000 (Probably at the Landmark
on Main St.) to consider Bill 10 to rezone the property.
The
last public meeting was May 3, 2000 to present plans for possible rezoning
and construction proposals for the oil terminal. The plan is to
rezone the Lewis Oil property and demolish the tanks and place a 69,000
sf supermarket. Also 2 new restaurants will be erected around
the parking lot. The new lot will hold roughly 542 parking spaces.
More to come!
News
from the 10-19-00 Meeting on the Development on the Port Washington
Peninsula (10-2000)
The Residents for a more Beautiful Port Washington sponsored a seminar
"Sustainable Port Washington Peninsula" hosted by Peter Kumbel
of Land Ethics (Ann Arbor, MI).
Peter discussed the fact that Residents hired them to study
the amount of open space and recreational space in all of Port Washington.
Their study focused on the 4 main development projects (Thypin Steel,
Morewood, 41-acres and Lewis Oil). The study concluded that Port North
severely lacks recreational space. They compared or Village to national
standards and stated that we should acquire 20 more acres of open space
for recreation to be comparable to the national standard of 9.6 acres
per 1000 people. To request a copy of the executive summary call Residents
at 516-767-9151 or e-mail them at PWResident

The Mayor indicated that the Citgo Station placed several concrete bumpers
in the parking lot (behind the service station) to deter stray shopping
carts from impacting parked cars and inflicting damage. This was in
lieu of installing a fence.

The Village may be looking to institute an architectural review board

Village Historian, George Williams. The Village will look into it further
and may start looking to appoint members.
